According to Runner's World, so-called "cryotherapy" serves to constrict the blood vessels and decrease metabolic activity, which in turn reduces swelling and tissue breakdown. Then, when the skin/muscles are no longer frozen, and begin to warm up, blood will flow faster, which "helps return the byproducts of cellular breakdown to the lymph system for efficient recycling by the body," (whatever that means).
In other words, it may be incredibly painful, but good for you. So be a man and stick through it. Don't be a coward.
